Since the feet, ankles and lower legs support the body and propel us forward, the amount of "work" that the lower extremity has to do is directly related to a number of factors.
Obviously, the heavier somebody is the more stress that is placed on the feet and legs. This also holds true for the person that is on their feet more and pushes the limits of their body such as in the case of an athlete.
As times goes on science is finding that nutrition plays a greater role not so much in extending human life, (although there is plenty of research going on in that field), but mainly in giving us a better quality of life in the years that we have. If we can keep our "body parts" from falling apart the quality of our life will be that much better, experiencing less pain, and receiving more function out of our body.
So no matter which direction your life seems to be going, (fit and in shape or a couch potato with debilitating disease) the lower extremity suffers on each count.
Having said that, I still feel a sound body is a better choice than a failing one.
For that reason I decided to create this page which contains a number of articles and references for a healthier lifestyle. On this page you will find articles on exercise, diet, fitness and nutrition.
I did it for two reasons. One, because I live what most would describe as a healthy lifestyle. I was heavy up until the age of 13, then decided that was not for me and have taken care of myself ever since in an ever-changing criteria of healthy living, (as the science changes, I change). Secondly, in spite of what I said at the onset about the lower extremity taking a beating whether your overweight or an athlete, I think in the long run you are much better off being in shape. Over the years it has amazed me at the number of patients, I have seen, that in their later years are in very poor health, knowing that had they done a few things different in their lifestyles at an earlier age, they would not be in the shape they are in now. Please believe me when I tell you there is nothing worse than being elderly and suffering from a multitude of disease processes.
Even today, some people do not believe that diet, exercise and nutrition will make you healthier. They are truly in denial. When I have a new patient come to the office and they appear to be healthy, in every one of the cases, upon questioning, I come to find that they do indeed lead healthy life styles. Folks, its not rocket science.
Possibly, the most amazing book I ever read on diet and exercise is Bill Phillip's "Body for Life". The book is about a twelve week program of diet and exercise with both aspects being easy to accomplish. In his book are before and after pictures of people who tried his program. It is absolutely amazing to see the transformation of these people. It should serve as an inspiration to anyone who wants to change their life around. I am constantly recommending this book to my patients.
Look through these articles and "healthy living" web sites and directories and see if there might not be something in here for you that just might make a difference in your life.
