nonunion big toe, 2nd and 3rd toe

I dropped an armoire door on my toes December 9th 2009. It hurt, minimal swelling, totally purple, color returned and went to foot doctor. Hew x-rayed foot and identified problem. Removed big toe and 2nd toe nails due to hematomas.
Have been wearing a boot with metal protection bar wrapped around big toe and 2nd toe.
What criteria should be used to determine treatment for nonunions? It is just the tip of the big toe, 2nd and 3rd toes. Is surgery a good option to prevent further complications down the road. What about bone regrowth stuimulators?
As a complication, I have multiple sclerosis and already had balance issues but was able to walk. I walked faithfully every day to ensure that I could walk the next day. It is a bummer to now find that maybe I can't keep up with this exerise regime. It there a possibility that I'll be able to walk much distance in the future?
Also, what types of shoes are best for protection during the healing process?
Thanks for your advice.
Hi Beverly,
You said you had xrays but there was not mention of a fracture, just bleeding underneath the toe nails, so there is no need to have any discussion about nonunion.
I would recommend you wear a good laced oxford shoe for every day walking and a good walking shoe for when you go out for your walks.
If your toes have stopped showing improvement then speak to you doctor so he or she can determine if there is anything else going on.
