pain at the ball of the foot and slight pain on top

A week or so ago, while running in minimalist shoes, I stepped on a pretty big stone. The ball of my foot under the 2nd toe hurt immediately but as the run went on it hurt less. It still hurts some when I press on that area and sometimes hurts when I walk barefoot on hard surfaces, like I have a lump there, but now I notice that the 2nd metatarsal on the top of my foot hurts slightly when I press on it. Can the two be related? Could I have caused a slight stress fracture AND gotten a bruise on the ball of the foot from stepping on that stone? Or is the pain on the top of my foot just an aggravation from the bruise, since it is only inches away from the spot where I landed on the rock. 6 months ago I had a stress fracture on the other foot but this time the pain is way less. If it is just a bruise on the ball of my feet, I could run with more cushioned shoes until the bruise resolved. But if there is a stress fracture, however slight, I would want to wait until that heals. I would appreciate any help you could offer. I WAS training for a fall marathon and would love to continue.

Hi,
There is always the possibility that there is a stress fracture (along with a bone bruise) and the only way to know for sure is with an xray. Plus if you hope to run a marathon you need to resolve this problem as soon as possible. Go see your doctor.
