Back in July, 2008 I received a stress fracture on the distal end of the third metatarsal of my right foot. I have had pain on the top of my foot, mid-way between the toes and the ankle, ever since. The last x-ray shows that the fracture line has healed and is barely evident. The x-ray report states there is a mild deformity and there has been some thickening of the bone. The doctor is not sure why I am still having the pain. Any ideas or thoughts?
Hi, I have no idea why you would still be having pain, but if you were my patient I would order an MRI to look for additional pathology that the x-ray does not show. The pain may be nothing more than the result of walking differently on the foot while the fracture site was healing. This leads to referred pain. If the doctor does not want to order an MRI, you could try some anti-inflammatory medication (assuming you can tolerate it) and some physical therapy. Marc Mitnick DPM
I developed a stress fracture after I tore my miniscus on my left knee. The stress fracture did not show in the exrays and the Podiatrist I was going to thought it was a neuroma and was shooting something in my foot to numb or deaden the nerve. I finally found a doctor with enough smarts to order an MRI and they discovered a stress fracture. Now I have a similar problem with my other foot which I attribute to climbing in my tree stand. I think the tree spikes cause an irritation in my arch giving me problems in my mid foot. I am on a anti inflamm called celebrex which has helped however I am looking into orthotics to help the area. Mid foot arthritis is the diagnosis from my foot surgeon but he said the arthritis is limited. Still painful to walk on my feet and the morning is the worse. I recommend an MRI before you do anything else.
