Pain on the outside of my right foot

Hi I recently started to run again, took about a year off to rest my body from chronic ankle injuries and two hand surgeries. I am 18 years old, a male and in fairly good shape. I started running, only on treadmills, and was doing about a mile a day for a week and then I increased it the distance to about 4 miles in 35-40 minutes. I weighed 137 pounds when I first started to run (I am only about 5'6") but when I was the most fit I was only about 123 pounds, I am down to 128 now.

For about a week now I have experienced the most uncomfortable feeling in my right foot. It is on the outside of my foot, pretty much right in the middle of it as well, maybe a little closer to the back. At the point I am at right now, I cannot walk barefoot without experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort. I walk with a limp at all times now. I can run though, and once I start running and "zone out" the pain is almost unnoticeable, however as soon as I take off the headphones and start walking, the pain is back and worse than ever. I am also a frequent basketball player, and as I said before, suffered major ankle injuries to both feet, however the worst one came about 2 years ago. I have bone spurs in both ankles and I do have tend to "waddle" from side to side when I walk, and both my feet point outward when I walk. This have never been a problem though, but it wasn't until a week ago when I started to notice very uncomfortable pain. Even when I play basketball, I feel much discomfort in the ankle, but none in my foot, but as soon as I get back to walking again, it returns.

I also have orthotics that were made to fit my foot from a foot doctor I visit. I visited him about 4 days ago and he noticed that my foot was actually curving inward when I walked, so he raised the orthotic to position the inside of my right foot a little bit higher. It felt a little better as soon as I put the orthotics back in my shoe, but the pain simply returned when I started to run.
I am thinking to revisit my doctor again, but I did not want to return so soon and was wondering if this sounded like it was something any doctor would tell me. Thank you.

Hi,
I would recommend having an xray to rule out a stress fracture as this is one problem that could occur as a result of your "story". I am not really sure where exactly you are having your pain, but a fracture would be potentially the most severe problem that could cause pain after resuming running.
Also, make sure there is no component in the orthotic that could be aggravating your symptoms.

Stress Fracture

I had a similar experience. I felt the pain on the outside of my left foot between the heel bone and pinky toe. I quit running for about 8-weeks to let it heal. Fine now, back to running.
