very painful lump on bottom of foot center of arch almost to heel

After standing for longer periods than normal in slippers, I have this lump appear on the arch of my foot close to heel base. It is very painful to touch and find it difficult to walk on it. I have had it for 4 days now and resting does not seem to have helped any so far. Is there anything else I can try.
Hi Sandra, Without having the luxury of examining you, I think the swelling may be the result of plantar fasciitis. Just to be sure, see my page on plantarfibromatosis to make sure that is not the source of the lump. If it is true plantarfasciitis and not plantarfibromatosis, then you may try anti-inflammatory medication (if you can tolerate it), along with moist heat and some kind of orthotic. Try to avoid walking around barefoot. Give it two weeks, if not improved, a visit to a podiatrist would be in order. Marc Mitnick DPM
