Vitamin D

Blood tests showed that I had a vitamin D deficiency. Strong Vitamin D doses were prescribed. Several dozen plantar warts on my left foot started to disappear at the same time. Three months later, with regular small dose vitamin D after one week of mega vitamin D, all warts are completely gone. Could be coincidence...

Hi,
I have never read anything about a relationship between vitamin D and wart virus, but certainly anything is possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Plantars warts
by: Anonymous

I just looked on line to confirm what I believed to be true. After taking 1000iu of Vitamin D3, the three plantar's warts on the bottom of my foot were completely gone!! I had been taking vitamins C and B complex for some time. When I added the D, away they went.

Hi,
As far as I know, there are no studies confirming the effectiveness of vitamin D3 in eliminating warts, but there is anecdotal evidence suggesting vitamin D3 has anti-viral capabilities. Since warts are a viral infection, it is not surprising that people like yourself are writing in suggesting a correlation between warts and vitamin D3.
My protocol these days is to recommend vitamin D3 to all my patients who present for treatment of warts (along with aggressive local treatment).
Thank you for your comments.

Vitamin D and warts
by: Dawn

My experience is similar to the others. I have been fighting warts on my hands for a couple of years with many different therapies. I had my vitamin D level checked and it was low. I started 1000 IUs of vitamin D and suddenly my warts were shrinking and disappearing.

Yay you!
by: northerner

Hi all,
I live in the far north and have increased my vitamin D intake to 5800 international units per day for now. Each day I notice the warts fading more and more. The Linus Pauling Institute suggests an upper level of 4000 IUs per day and I realize that different D products have different bioavailability so I'm being cautious. Anyway, I just wanted to contribute here because I too have noticed that D seems to have some effective against warts. Good luck all! I hope this works and I wish you great skin!

Thanks for your contribution. I have started recommending oral vitamin D3 to my patients with warts and in a few instances I have seen some remarkable results. Just remember with any supplement, more is not necessarily better.

Correlation... Causation?
by: Anonymous

I have been taking vitamin d3 drops 20,000 IU per week. Prior to supplementation, I had four fingers with warts for almost one year. I have tried a number of ineffective over-the-counter topical treatments, resulting only in pain. After only two weeks of taking 20,000 IU D3 drops per week, the warts have nearly cleared entirely.

Hi,
Thanks for your comment. Every day more news about the benefits of Vitamin D3 comes to light. The only problem is the recommended dose. It seems the government and health experts cannot agree on the proper dosing.
It now appears that VitaminD3 has an anti-viral component to it which makes it helpful in treating warts, as they have a viral origin. (it is also postulated that the reason people living in the southern part of the United States have less incidence of the flu is because they have more exposure to the sun).
In my office, I am now recommending 1000 IU of Vitamin D3 for children and 2000 IU for adults in my treatment of warts.

Same story here
by: Anonymous

I've been dealing with multiple warts on both feet and tried all sort of solutions (liquid Nitrogen, duct tape, NuCara cream, acid... you name it). I went for blood work a couple of months ago and my vitamin D came back low, been on 2000iu daily since then and my dozens of warts are gone. I'm a firm believer that the two are tied. I was talking to my wife about the thought that vitamin d might have fixed this and found this... thought I'd give you my thoughts as well.

Vitamin D
by: Anonymous

I have had a persistant plantar wart on my right foot for a couple of years. I have tried cryotherapy, salicylic acid, and my podiatrist even removed it (which was an unpleasant experience!). It grew back within weeks! I stopped messing with it a few months ago and decided it will go away when it's ready. My acupuncturist said I had a Vitamin D deficiency and suggested I take 3000 IUs per day. I have been taking it for two weeks and noticed my wart disappearing...but didn't make the correlation until I read under the Alternative Medicine link that Vitamin D3 topical patches could possibly be effective in wart removal. Then I came upon all of these testimonials -- awesome. I wish I had started taking Vitamin D sooner.

Vitamin D Works
by: Dave

Same story. Several plantar warts that I've fought with a variety of methods for several years. Just as I was starting to explore surgery, I was put on 2000 mg of Vitamin D after a regular blood test. I started taking the vitamins about three weeks ago and over the past few days have noticed dramatic changes in the warts (shrinking / dissapearing), causing me to think about what I was doing differently and google the possible connection. Thanks to all who have commented - this is really working for me and no placebo effect because I didn't even think about a possible connection until this morning!

Hi Dave,

Glad to hear that vitamin D seems to be working for you as well.

Although, not yet proven through research, the current thinking is that vitamin D has anti-viral effects and since warts are a virus, the vitamin should be effective in destroying them.

It is the same kind of working hypothesis that would explain why people who live in warm, sunny parts of the country tend to get less flu then those that live in the more northernly parts.

My daughter, son, and I all have a vitamin D deficiency. After taking a supplemental dosage (2000 mg a day) we are no longer dealing with warts on our feet. We had dealt with them on a regular basis...never able to get rid of them, but now no recurrence.

Warts & Vitamin D not for me
by: April

A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with low Vitamin D and started taking 3000 iu along with what is is my other supplements. I have had a wart on the ball of my foot that I have tried the wart removers on to no avail. The wart is still there. I finally broke down and went to a podiatrist about it as it started to hurt. He has been shaving it off and it continues to come back. Yesterday, he cut it out. I wish I had found this site before I had it cut out. I would have tried upping the Vitamin D by a few thousand for a short time even though it has been at normal level for quite some time. I think this was pushed in very deep from walking on the ball of my foot.

Vitamin D, I think it works
by: Brandon

Hi, I had about 15 warts on my left foot for several years and tried everything to get rid of them. One day, seemingly out of the blue, I noticed all of them turning black. I tried to think what could be causing them to "die" and all I could contribute it to was my recent vitamin d intake. It seemed to be too big of a coincidence that as soon as I started taking vitamin d that all of my warts turned black. I have been taking one tablet of vitamin D3 (1,000IU, 25mcg) every morning for the past 3 months or so and all of my warts fell off in a month. If you have warts I believe it doesnt hurt to try taking vitamin d, because even if it doesnt treat your warts, there are many other health benefits to taking it.

I second the vitamin D
by: CatinWA

Or four or fifth it.

I originally test at 6 for vitamin D levels. I have since moved up to 24. My doctor would optimally like to see my levels up towards 80. I live in the rainy northwest...no surprise.

I've had plantars warts on my feet for I can't tell you how long. 10 years maybe? I've tried it all, from OTC to the weird and bizarre.

I now take 50,000 IUs a week and my warts are quickly disappearing. One down, a few more to go. I'm astonished and amazed. I've been given a prescription, but I'm just taking the regular OTC stuff. Big Pharam doesn't need any more of my money.

The way it's been explained to me is Vitamin D deals with the production of fighter cells and immune system boosting. It makes sense that nothing else has worked.

The vitamin D test is a simple, cheap blood test. My doctor said she likes to see people between 80-100 and she's never seen anyone have too much in all the years she's been testing. Very few people get to 100, but be sure to check blood levels every few months.

Hi,
Thanks for your post. I am becoming a believer in the benefits of Vitamin D as well. I would caution any visitor viewing this post that with Vitamin D, more is not necessarily better.
The working dosage formula I am presently using is 35 iu per pound of body weight. So a 100 pound person should be taking 3500 iu per day.
Having said that, I agree with your statement that your vitamin D blood levels should be checked periodically and dose your daily consumption of Vitamin D accordingly.

Add 1 more case of correlation
by: Pat McGee

I started taking 1000 mg of Vitamin D several months ago. Last week I noticed that a wart on my elbow had disappeared. It had been there at least 10 years, and I had tried for about 5 years to treat it (salicyclic acid topically and then duct tape) without success. I think this was a definite correlation. I'd love to see some studies to see if it is indeed causality or just coincidence.

Ditch the topical acid!
by: Anonymous

I started taking 3000 mg/day of vitamin D capsules to see what effect it might have on my health and noticed within a week that several areas where I had once treated warts with salacylic acid began softening and clearing up. I suspected that the Vitamin D was to be credited so I searched and happily found these similar testimonials. It is amazing how superior the results are versus using topical acid or duct tape.

Could it be Vitamin D?
by: Anonymous

I am a Caucasian physician who has had 4 plantar warts on his foot for three years and tried liquid nitrogen and duct tape unsuccessfully to rid them.

Two months ago I checked my vitamin D level and despite taking 1000 IU per day it came back low. I upped the dose to 2000 IU per day and one month later I was shocked to see the three smallest warts completely gone and the large fourth wart also on its way out.

We know from recent studies on H1N1 outcomes that there is a correlation between low vitamin D levels and poor outcome. This would suggest that vitamin D is involved possibly with regulating or enhancing cell-mediated immunity which is required to clear HPV viruses as well.

I am going to start checking the vitamin D level in my worst wart patients and supplement to see if there is something to this vitamin D hypothesis.

This would be quite something if all it takes is some extra vitamin D by mouth to clear warts once and for all.

Vitamin D and Warts
by: Linda

My daughter has had warts on her feet for several years. We have tried every over-the-counter treatment and every non-traditional treatment (herbal treatments, apple cider vinegar, duct tape...). Nothing worked and the warts were increasing in size and number. As part of her Type I diabetes treatment, her nutritionist recommended that she take 2000 i.u. of Vitamin D. Within 6 weeks, her warts disappeared. It may be coincidence but we have not changed anything else in her life and the warts are gone! I'd love to see some research on this.

High Doses of Vitamin D and Disappearing Warts
by: JJ, PhD

I, too, am amazed to see that some painful and persistent (decades!) warts under my fingernails and on my left foot seem to have disappeared.

Years of aggressive treatments (including acids, expensive creams, bleach, duct tape, razors) and minor surgeries suggested/employed by various doctors did not work. I finally gave up and left them alone. So why have they disappeared now?

The only major difference in my habits lately has been that I've been taking large doses of Vitamin D daily (2-3,000 IU daily) because of a Vitamin D deficiency. This led me to google "Vitamin D" and "warts," which led to this comment.

Of course, correlation does not equal causality, and I and the other commenter are only two people (too small a "sample" for convincing claims). Also, one of the once many warts on my foot remains. But trying Vitamin D is something easy and benign to explore further.

Good luck!
