Xray

I am 14 weeks pregnant with baby number 2. I broke my foot on Friday and they gave me an xray today to see how bad the break is. I am now worried about getting the xray! Since I got it a few of my friends stated that I should have passed on getting one. Could this harm my baby?

Hi,
The rule of thumb is to avoid x-rays during the first trimester. Since you are just beyond that and assuming you were well shielded I do not think there is too much to be worried about.

radiation of fetus
by: Anonymous

Hi! If I were you, I wouldn't worry about the radiation for several reason: firstly, the technologist that took the x-rays (i'm assuming they did 3 total) would have collimated down to your foot, and scatter from that would be minimal. secondly, the technologist (i'm again assuming) gave you a lead apron to block out what radiation, if any, did get around your abdomen. third, and finally, the dose that accompanies a foot series is very low - you get just as much background radiation over a period of time.
while it is true that UNNECESSARY x-rays should be avoided due to the possible effects of radiation on a fetus in the first trimester, if your foot is really fractured - that's something that needs to be taken care of ... pain lowers your immunities, and if your immuinites are low and you get sick - so does baby.

Hope this helped ease your fears... you didn't do anything wrong... and no, your child is not going to come out with three eyes and a tail :P
people worry about radiation b/c of possible miscarriage, and various other unknown effects of radiation on a fetus, and even then, in your situation this would be a far stretch.
