ball of foot hurts, bunion and neuroma

I have bunions and have no arches. the balls of my feet hurt and I also have a neuroma between my big toe and second toe. I have had 2 cortisone shots in the last year and can probably only get 1-2 more, they seem to last 3-4 months. Is a bunionectomy going to correct the pain from the neuroma and could it help with the pain in the balls of my feet, also?


Hi Adrienne,
In general terms, the bunionectomy will help your bunion. It might help the neuroma slightly because your foot will not be as wide, but I would not have the surgery under the assumption that it will relieve your neuroma. The surgery will also not help the ball of your foot.
If you are going to have the bunion surgery you may as well consider having neuroma surgery at the same time as this is a lesser procedure and should not extend the healing process. Speak to your doctor.

Hi there,

I have been wearing orthotics on and on for a several years. In the past six months I have been wearing them regularly in almost all of my shoes.
I have spend countless hours looking for the proper foot wear to accomodate my orthotics. It's been a frustrating experience, but one I took seriously.
Now, with summer here, I'm in a predicament.
I continued my diligent search for orthotic-friendly sandals (that were somewhat fashionable) and had no luck. I realized that what I needed to do was find a sandal that was sturdy, had a good rocker, decent arch support and an adjustable strap at the forefoot. And was also no more than two inches high.
I found all of these options in a Dansko sandal.
I wore them around the house for several hours and other than some subtle lower back discomfort (my body adjusting to the new shoe) the shoes felt great. I was relieved to finally have a shoe - that didn't require an orthotic - kept me pain free and allowed me to start living my life again.
I have bunions and almost no arch.
I wore the shoes today and after the first hour was in agony. Incessent pain in the left foot. Down the outer side below the last two toes. The discomfort stretched up behind my knee, to my lower back and then my jaw. I felt my entire skeleton shif.
What could be the cause of this???
I'm desperate for an answer. Is it tendonitis? A pinched nerve?
I know I should see a doctor - and i will - but I'm soaking my first in Epsom salts this very moment and felt compelled to write.
I hope you can help.
Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Dear Dr. Mitnick, The orthotics arrived four days ago and I slipped them into my shoes immediately. I was skeptical as to the usefulness of the item, they really didn't look very exotic. I have to say though, after using them for just four days, I have experienced grand relief from my foot pain. Even the very first day, I was able to do a lot of work while on my feet with at least a 75% reduction of pain. It has only gotten better every day, and I go nowhere without my shoes with the orthotics. I had been experiencing extreme heel and sole pain for about six months and had to take extended breaks off my feet many times a day as well as regular doses of Ibuprofen. Since getting the orthotics, my life has returned to normal and I feel good again. Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation for a very effective item, I had no idea what a change this item could affect.

Dr. Mitnick, Thank you, you were 100% correct. The pain finally brought me to the ER. I spent 8 days in the hospital. The Doppler you spoke of was able to show that there was no pulse in that foot. This was an arterial clot that split and traveled throughout my leg. My leg was almost amputated. I am in rough shape but have all my parts intact!! You certainly know what you are talking about. Dr. Mitnick, Just want to say thank you so very much for your quick response and very informative reply! After reading what you had to say, I called the doctor's office and was able to get in and see him the same day as my injury. Toe was x-rayed and luckily, it is not broken or fractured. Very badly bruised and will probably lose the toe nail. And although my toe and toe nail are still very black and blue and very sore, they ARE both starting to feel a little better. So again, thank you! I am so very happy that I came across your website. The service you provide is outstanding and immeasurable!
