Discoloration after surgery

How long after you've have foot surgery does that initial discoloration resolve? I am 4 months post op from a bunionectomy and I still have a purple foot when I sit or stand. I thought by now that issue would have fixed itself.

Hi Lois,
Since I do not know your age, the status of your circulation, or your weight, it is hard for me to give you an accurate answer. I would think by now just the area around the surgical site would be discolored and certainly less so than say a month ago. If the whole foot is discolored that would concern me. Have your doctor look at your foot to make sure there is not another problem going on.

9 months after bunionectomy the base of my middle toes have turned a dark color and won’t go away. I also have a sharp pain where I assume The screw is that is holding the bone together.

Nine months is long enough that you should be just about pain free. If you are still getting a sharp pain, you should let your surgeon know about it.

blue foot after surgery

I had surgery to repair 3 breaks at the ankle on June 20th. If I put my foot down for 5 minutes it is so blue half way up the leg and swells bad and hurts, any ideas? Thanks

Hi, I'm 40 & approx. 140 lbs black female, status post bunionectomy 6 weeks. My foot is still discolored (bluish). I am also concerned because it's obvious, because I'm yellowish-brown complexion. My husband had the same procedure 10 yrs. ago, & because of his complexion, we could see the difference in color so obviously. As a nurse, I do know that it takes some longer to regain their natural color, & each individual is different.

I am 43, weigh around 107 - 110, and am in excellent health. I noticed the discoloration at the beginning of this process and was told that it was normal and due to the blood finding its way back to the foot/toes. My concern is that I had noticed that it was pretty much gone for a few weeks. Then, about a week or two ago I noticed it had returned whenever I stood (cooking, at the sink, standing in line) or sat at my desk doing work. I just find it odd and wondered why this was happening. I will ask my doctor upon her return. She is gone for two weeks and I have an appointment pending her return next week.

Dear Dr. Mitnick, The orthotics arrived four days ago and I slipped them into my shoes immediately. I was skeptical as to the usefulness of the item, they really didn't look very exotic. I have to say though, after using them for just four days, I have experienced grand relief from my foot pain. Even the very first day, I was able to do a lot of work while on my feet with at least a 75% reduction of pain. It has only gotten better every day, and I go nowhere without my shoes with the orthotics. I had been experiencing extreme heel and sole pain for about six months and had to take extended breaks off my feet many times a day as well as regular doses of Ibuprofen. Since getting the orthotics, my life has returned to normal and I feel good again. Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation for a very effective item, I had no idea what a change this item could affect.

Dr. Mitnick, Thank you, you were 100% correct. The pain finally brought me to the ER. I spent 8 days in the hospital. The Doppler you spoke of was able to show that there was no pulse in that foot. This was an arterial clot that split and traveled throughout my leg. My leg was almost amputated. I am in rough shape but have all my parts intact!! You certainly know what you are talking about. Dr. Mitnick, Just want to say thank you so very much for your quick response and very informative reply! After reading what you had to say, I called the doctor's office and was able to get in and see him the same day as my injury. Toe was x-rayed and luckily, it is not broken or fractured. Very badly bruised and will probably lose the toe nail. And although my toe and toe nail are still very black and blue and very sore, they ARE both starting to feel a little better. So again, thank you! I am so very happy that I came across your website. The service you provide is outstanding and immeasurable!
