Pain when standing

Severe pain in the balls of both feet both while standing


My husband started with pain in the balls of his feet several years ago. He was diagnosed with Morton's neuroma and has had 7 individual surgeries on his feet. The doctors have stated that the neuromas have been removed and are not an issue any longer. However, he is still dealing with near constant foot pain. He is an critical care nurse and is on his feet most of his work day. He has gone to various podiatrists without anyone being able to give him any help beyond shoes that rock and take the pressure off of the ball of his foot. While these shoes help somewhat, he is still having to live with this pain. He has been prescribed Percocet for pain relief but is having a difficult time functioning on the dosage it takes to help relief his pain. PLEASE, if you can offer any help, we would be so thankful. He has even spoken of having the nerves cut so there is no feeling whatsoever or even taking the drastic step of having the forefoot of both feet removed and wearing a prosthetic just to have some relief from this pain. We are at our wits end and do not know where to turn. Thank you very much, Bobbie Dell'Acqua

Hi Bobbie,
You need to start thinking "outside the box" and perhaps you already have, but this may be a problem that goes beyond the foot in its origins. Has your husband been to a neurologist and rheumatologist? The idea being that the source of the pain may not be neuroma at all. You mention seven foot surgeries; were they all for neuromas? I hope not. If that is the case, your husband may have so much scar tissue that there may be excessive irritation on the remaining nerve further back in the foot.
I wish I could be more help, but without being able to examine him, I cannot come up with any more ideas.

Hi Bobbie
I am dealing with the same problem. Maybe not as servere. I have ball pain and its even in my toes now. I had a neuroma removed on my left foot about a year ago. I refused to do my right foot because I really don't think thats the problem. Both feet still have the same feeling. They hurt even when I am in bed. In the morning I have to get up slow because I have trouble putting my feet down on the floor. I alway love to walk barefoot but now I always grab my flip flops with cushion. After awhile when I start walking it feels better. I believe it is more than a neuroma and I too am going to take this further because I can't handle this everyday. Dear Dr. Mitnick, The orthotics arrived four days ago and I slipped them into my shoes immediately. I was skeptical as to the usefulness of the item, they really didn't look very exotic. I have to say though, after using them for just four days, I have experienced grand relief from my foot pain. Even the very first day, I was able to do a lot of work while on my feet with at least a 75% reduction of pain. It has only gotten better every day, and I go nowhere without my shoes with the orthotics. I had been experiencing extreme heel and sole pain for about six months and had to take extended breaks off my feet many times a day as well as regular doses of Ibuprofen. Since getting the orthotics, my life has returned to normal and I feel good again. Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation for a very effective item, I had no idea what a change this item could affect.

Dr. Mitnick, Thank you, you were 100% correct. The pain finally brought me to the ER. I spent 8 days in the hospital. The Doppler you spoke of was able to show that there was no pulse in that foot. This was an arterial clot that split and traveled throughout my leg. My leg was almost amputated. I am in rough shape but have all my parts intact!! You certainly know what you are talking about. Dr. Mitnick, Just want to say thank you so very much for your quick response and very informative reply! After reading what you had to say, I called the doctor's office and was able to get in and see him the same day as my injury. Toe was x-rayed and luckily, it is not broken or fractured. Very badly bruised and will probably lose the toe nail. And although my toe and toe nail are still very black and blue and very sore, they ARE both starting to feel a little better. So again, thank you! I am so very happy that I came across your website. The service you provide is outstanding and immeasurable!
