Left side of foot pain, heel and ball of foot pain

by Missy
(Cincinnati, Ohio)

Hello,

I am a 44 year old Pe teacher who has been experiencing foot pain since October. I have had numerous xrays, 2 MRI's and numerous injections in the foot and arch. I spent 2 1/2 months in a walking boot, then ankle brace and have been fitted and been wearing orthotics since the end of Dec. The pain in the ball of my foot is really bothering me to the point that my toes and foot goes numb. I am really frustrated with this and tired of dealing with it. The last MRI was on 7/3 and am waiting for the appointment to hear the results. It was to see if it was a neuroma or capsulitisis. I go back to school in 6 weeks and dread having to stand all day with my foot feeling this way.

The foot specialist I am going to at my last visit mentioned 2 different surgeries that they could do. I am not sure what to do. Any recommendations or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Missy,
As an outsider looking in I would think if you have the type of unremitting pain that you write about and have tried various treatments to no avail then you may have to consider surgery. Read my essay on "surgical considerations".
Having said that, it the diagnosis comes back as a Morton's neuroma you might want to inquire about denatured alcohol injections. I have been doing them for a number of years and it has dramatically reduced the number of neuromas that I ultimately have to surgically remove.

Onto the alcohol injections
by: Missy

Hi Dr. Marc,

I have now been through 3 series of 2 injections into the two nueromas every two weeks a total of 6 injections, these being anti-inflamatory injections and still no relief. This week I had the first series of the alcohol injections. I am scheduled for 2 injections every two weeks. My Dr. said if there is still pain after the 7th series of injections it will not help. They said I probably would not see any improvement until the 3rd series of injections. Does this sound right?

I really just want my foot to feel normal again, it has been almost a year since my foot pain started.

Diagnosis
by: Missy

Hi Dr. Marc,

I just got back from the doctor and the MRI showed not one pinched nerve but two along with capsulitis. The Dr. explained that a normal nerve can be up to 3 mm in size and mine measured in at 10 an 11mm in size if that makes sense. So quite inflammed. We are going to try several more anti-inflamatory injections. I had 2 today and go back in 2 weeks for 2 more and then in 4 weeks for 2 more. We will then see how things are going if I still have pain she will try the acohol injections that you spoke of. Thank you so much for your help and suggestions.
